What Shopify does well, said fairly
Shopify is a rented shop, and renting has real virtues. You can be selling in a weekend. The platform handles the hosting, the security and the updates, so there’s nothing to maintain. The tills work, the templates are tidy, and if your needs are standard, it does the standard things smoothly.
If you’re testing an idea, dipping a toe, or selling a handful of simple products as a sideline, renting is a perfectly reasonable arrangement. We’d tell you so.
What renting actually costs
The rent is monthly, roughly £25 to over £100 depending on the tier, forever. Unless you use their payment system, there’s a transaction fee on every sale, forever. Features that fall outside “standard” often live in the app store, each with its own monthly fee, forever. That word keeps appearing because it’s the point: renting never finishes.
And the deeper cost is the arrangement itself. The rules, the fees and the features are the landlord’s to change. If you ever leave, you pack what you can carry and start again elsewhere. Your stock book goes with you: product data, customer records and your own domain name are yours to take when you leave. The building isn’t. In that sense, your shop was never really yours.
What WooCommerce is instead
WooCommerce is a shop you own. It runs on WordPress, on your own hosting, under your own name. No platform rent. No transaction fees to the shop system, ever. And no ceiling on what it can become: because you own the building, it can be customised without limit. Trade and retail pricing side by side. Delivery rules that match how you actually deliver. The unusual thing your business does that no template anticipated. Owned shops bend to fit the business.
Honesty requires the other half: an owned shop, like an owned anything, needs looking after. Hosting, updates, security, backups. You can do that yourself, or a care plan handles it from £40 a month, which is less than most Shopify tiers before their fees. Ownership isn’t free. It’s just yours.
So which one?
If you’re experimenting, rent. Genuinely. Come back when the experiment works.
If you’re trading, and you plan to still be trading in five years, own. The arithmetic favours it within a couple of years, the customisation favours it immediately, and the independence favours you forever, to borrow the platforms’ favourite word.
We build owned shops, so you know where we stand. But we’d rather you rented for the right reasons than owned for the wrong ones, and if you’re on Shopify now and it’s working for you, that’s not a problem in need of our solution. When the rent starts to rankle or the template starts to pinch, the door’s open, and your stock, your customers and your Google rankings can all make the move with you.
